Love is.......Connection over Toothbrushes
I though it was a good idea.
I wanted to depict the busy-ness of life and how much I miss spending time with my husband.
Adulting means grabbing those good moments when they are unexpected or unplanned, even when they don’t fit the norm.
So I thought that bonding over brushing teeth could be one of those moments common to many so it could be a good, relateable idea.
When I produced the first illustration I was not practiced at digital art as I had been focusing on watercolours and copics. I was bought a basic drawing tablet as a present and so I launched straight in using Krita – a pretty awesome free art software.
In terms of learning the basics it was great because there was not too much there to overwhelm but enough there for a beginner to start producing.
I guess the result speaks for itself.!
The concept is there but there is no dynamism or movement. The composition is boring, it holds no interest, it is a very boring colour pallete, the values are all the same and if I flip the canvas it is all wrong!. It is recognisable as a couple brushing their teeth and locking eyes though and for that alone I am pleased.
To conclude here is what I picked up:-
Drawing accurate shapes is one aspect of art, but only one - there is so much more that goes into making a good piece that I never even knew about until I started doing it. That is the same for everything ie working, kids, marriage, church, Jesus, friends - even making dinner for crying out loud!
Once I got started I could see what was missing. Before then I could only see the first hurdle which was learning to draw. After that, another thing opened up to me, and another and another.
There is always something to be pleased about. Actually recognising the first piece for what it was is a real achievement because a few months before that I had produced nothing digitally. A few months before that I could not draw people at all.
Progress is always there, even when it is hard to spot, just look a little harder and you are sure to find it.
